Local Groups and Individuals urged to pledge commitment to low carbon living
Local community groups and individual citizens will be gathering in Campbell Park in central Milton Keynes on Saturday 28th November between 1-2pm. The aim of the gathering is to show support for the national and international campaigning efforts aiming to put climate change much higher on the political agenda, specifically before the next key UN Conference on Climate Change due to take place in Paris between 30th November and 11th December (‘COP21’).
The event, funded by MK Community Foundation, is organised by Transition MK, a leading local environmental group who, with the support from Citizens MK, are encouraging other organisations and community groups in Milton Keynes, and individuals to take part. Both organisations recognise the value and importance of making our politicians aware of the widespread concern over the climate change issue.
The event is one of two events organised by the group in November, following the hugely successful and well attended talk from the renowned climate change author and communication specialist, George Marshall, which took place on Friday 20th November.
Everyone attending the rally will be urged to sign a pledge card, making a commitment to reduce their individual carbon footprint, putting pressure on the MPs in Milton Keynes to take the action to David Cameron, and demanding policies which promote investment in renewable energy – a reversal of recent decisions to abolish support for wind, solar and biomass energy. The completed pledge cards will then be handed over the local office of our MPs on the morning of Monday 30th, urging them to take further action.
The plan for the rally is to meet at The MK Rose at 1pm and walk to the Beacon of Hope, where pledges (which will be provided) will be collected and everyone will have a chance to meet with other groups. There will be a few short speeches by local dignitaries. The event is scheduled to finish by 2.00pm.
