Community Action: MK and Dentons are hosting a series of four talks throughout 2017 aimed at providing “Top Tips” to community groups, social enterprises, charities and other not-for-profit organisations in Milton Keynes. The talks will provide an introduction to legal issues typically faced by not-for-profit organisation can make suggestions about how such issues may be overcome.

The first talk will provide “Top Tips” for dealing with volunteers and employees. Emma Naughton of Dentons will give an introduction to the employment issues that may arise where a community group or organisation employs individuals or recruits volunteers to assist with the organisation’s work. In particular, Emma will discuss the topics set out below.

  1. Recruiting employees/volunteers and dealing with employment contracts.
  2. Dealing with disagreements between employees/volunteers (harassment, bullying, etc.).
  3. Handling grievance and disciplinary matters.
  4. Making fair dismissals and dealing with redundancies.

This talk is for you if you work for or are involved in the running of a community group, charity or other not-for-profit organisation that hires employees or volunteers or is considering doing so in the future. You will also find this talk useful if your organisation is suffering from lack of funding or similar issues and may need to reduce its number of employees.
