Community Led Initiatives
Parent Mentor role
Community Led Initiatives provide mentoring support to parents who are going through the Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) process. FDAC is a problem-solving court approach to improving outcomes for children involved in care proceedings. It offers an alternative – and more successful – way of supporting parents to overcome the substance misuse, mental health and domestic abuse problems that have put their children at risk of serious harm.
Parent Mentors get the opportunity to make a positive life-long difference in families lives. Mentors play a crucial role as an honest but non-judgemental figure who can help parents accept help from professionals.
Parent Mentors will play a key role in a parent’s recovery and help them to take control of their life again by accessing the support they need. When parents sustain recovery their children’s wellbeing, development and future life chances improve dramatically.
- Volunteer mentors will have the opportunity to complete accredited training such as level 3 Health and Social Care and Level 2 Peer Mentoring.
- The opportunity to gain invaluable experience of working with adults facing problems with substance abuse, mental health and domestic abuse
- The opportunity to gain invaluable experience of child protection proceedings
- Supervision and career guidance
Community Led Initiatives particularly welcome applications from parents who have overcome similar issues to those involved in FDAC (e.g. substance abuse, mental health, victims of domestic abuse) and those who have been affected by these issues indirectly.
