Good Governance in charities is fundamental to their success. It enables and supports a charity’s compliance with the law and relevant regulations. It also promotes a culture where everything works towards fulfilling the charity’s vision.
We know that it can be a huge job keeping up with all the latest best practice around regulation and compliance so thanks to funding from MK Community Foundation, we have developed a self assessment tool based on the Charity Code of Governance that you can use whether you are a charity or community group, large or small or anything in between!
The tool is a relatively quick and easy online form for your board or committee to assess how you are performing in regards to the seven key principles of Good Governance.
After completing the form, Community Action: MK will tailor advice and resources for you to use to improve your score. We will then ask you to implement our suggestions and reassess your performance at a later date.
We are also putting together a programme of workshops this spring and summer and we are also able to promote your trustee and committee member roles via our volunteering platform.
If you require more substantial support, we are happy to talk to you about a bespoke package of support. Please email Anna and Alissa.

There are 25 questions in total and the self -assessment will take approx 15-30 minutes. The form cannot be saved as you go so please make sure you give yourself enough time to complete it.
Please note you will be asked to agree to the following terms and conditions:
Committed to Good Governance is a programme run by Community Action: MK with funding from MK Community Foundation. It is a pilot project that will run until the end of 2018, however we will continue providing support on governance-related issues beyond the term of the project to help our local charities and community groups Milton Keynes develop strong governing structures based on the Code of Governance, so they can provide even better services to their beneficiaries and continue making a lasting change in our local communities.
By agreeing to these Terms & Conditions, you are committing on behalf of your charity or a group to:
- Follow up on and implement the recommendations received from Community Action: MK based on the Code of Governance after you have completed the self-assessment form, and share these with other the members of your board and the wider organisation.
- Complete the self-assessment form once again after a recommended period of time to measure your progress.
- Be added to our project mailing list through which we will be sharing updates and useful information related to the Code of Governance and to our project.
Thank you for participating in the project. We hope it will bring a range of benefits to you and your organisation.
