VAGABOND FILM FESTIVAL 2018

A new film festival for Milton Keynes

26 – 29 July 2018

Today we announce the full programme for VAGABOND FILM FESTIVAL an exciting new chapter in the film history in Milton Keynes.  Making its inaugural run between the 26 – 29 July at IF: Milton Keynes International Festival’s hub in Campbell Park the four-day festival showcases short and feature film screenings, local filmmakers, Free events, Q&A’s, workshops.

Through the distinct festival strands: ANIMATION; ACTIVISTS; ARRIVALS & ACROBATS we will deliver a festival that does what cinema was intended to do, create buzz and excitement around film and film culture. Cinema is a shared experience and to aid this we have four incredible venues: FLOATING CINEMA; CINEMA DOME CAMPBELL PARK; MK GALLERY EVENTS SPACE and 12th STREET that will create a unique cinematic experience.

Community, diversity, and inclusivity are at the heart of what we are doing at Vagabond Film Festival and our first programme reflects this wonderfully. We are working with the team behind F RATED, which champions female filmmakers, our programme will highlight all films by women with an ‘F Rating’..

In the build-up to the festival VAGABOND FILM FESTIVAL is producing a unique event for Milton Keynes City Council’s Peddling Culture initiative at Milton Keynes Festival Fringe called REDWAY RENDEZVOUS with the aid of the amazing ‘Cinema Bike’ from URBANE PROJECTION. This FREE event takes place from 20:15 on 14 July at MK Gallery and is a fantastic way to explore the wonder of Milton Keynes incredible cycle pathways and enjoy four comedy short films.

The festival launches at DOME CINEMA in Campbell Park on 26 July at 17:00 and later that evening we will screen REDOUBTABLE from 19:45. On 27 July at 15:15 we have Naoko Yamada’s A SILENT VOICE and at 19:00 the PREMIERE of THE DEMOCRATIC SET MK from Back to Back Theatre. On 28 July the DOME CINEMA will host a special sing-along screening of the classic British animated film YELLOW SUBMARINE at 19:00. On 29 July NEIL BRAND’S SILENT FILM FOR KIDS with live piano accompaniment starts at 14:00 and later in the evening we will be a screening JOURNEYMAN with Q&A from award-winning producer DIARMID SCHRIMSHAW.

VAGABOND FILM FESTIVAL opens on 26 July at 11:30 on the FLOATING CINEMA with the World Premiere of ENTER THE PORTAL – VIEW FROM THE LAKES ESTATE, commissioned exclusively for VAGABOND FILM FESTIVAL.

The LONDON INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL Shorts Programme aimed at 8-14 will screen four short films on 26 July at 14:00 and on the same day at 17:00 we will be showing the classic Disney animated film THE JUNGLE BOOK. We will also be screening FANTASTIC MR FOX at 17:00 on the 27 July and PETER RABBIT at 17:00 on 28 July.

Also on the 27 July from midday Milton Keynes-based filmmaker Samuel Bore curated a selection of 12 short films from deaf filmmakers called DEAF CULTURE INTO LIGHT will be screening featuring HOW TO MUG A DEAF PERSON by Ben Rufus Green, COMING OUT by Louis Neethling and CATERPILLAR by John Maidens.

Other highlights include 30 SHORT FILMS IN COMPETITION screened in FOUR SESSIONS at MK GALLERY EVENTS SPACE between 26 and 27 July. These incredible short films come from all over the world and were selected from over 130 submissions. Staying at MK GALLERY on 27 July we will be screening the 48 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE films.
