Community Action: MK is looking for an honorary treasurer to join our fantastic team of trustees.

The Honorary Treasurer:

  • Is a qualified accountant, with previous experience in a financial role of a commercial or not for profit organisation of similar or larger size than Community Action: MK
  • Has experience of corporate governance, preferably within the voluntary sector, either as a volunteer or as a member of staff, and with some experience of charity finance
  • Is skilled in presenting sometimes complex financial information to a variety of audiences in a clear and practical manner;
  • Can analyze proposals and examine their financial consequences.

The honorary treasurer has the following additional roles and responsibilities:

  • To oversee, on behalf of the Board, the long term financial management
  • To monitor the finances and to report to the Board at regular intervals on the financial health of the organisation, ensuring the organizations’ compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, including governing documents, and with good corporate governance;
  • To guide and oversee and advise the Board on the approval of budgets, accounts and published financial statements;
  • To ensure that appropriate accounting procedures, controls, and risk
  • management procedures are in place, and that financial resources are spent and invested, in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements and with good corporate governance;
  • To be instrumental in the development and implementation of appropriate accounting, reserves and investment policies

In carrying out the role, the Treasurer is expected:

  • To keep the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities;
  • To advise the Board (and the senior management) on the financial implications of any strategic plans;
  • To assure the Board that the financial resources meet its present and future needs;
  • To understand the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be
  • able to assure the Board that financial integrity is sound;
  • To ensure that the accounts are properly audited, and to provide financial
  • expertise, as appropriate;
  • To contribute to the income generation strategy;
  • To meet the external auditors independently from the staff (as appropriate);
  • To present the accounts at general meetings, drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understood way;
  • To work in close cooperation with senior management

The Honorary Treasurer is a member of the Executive Committee. From time to time he or she may be invited to sit on recruitment or other panels.

The annual time commitment is expected to be approximately 15 days plus
regular contact with other trustees and staff by email and telephone.

Carers Milton Keynes and its sister charity Carers Bucks are looking for new Trustee Board Members with talent and enthusiasm. If you are, have been or know someone who is a family carer, so much the better.

The charity’s work in their respective geographic areas and between them support nearly ten thousand adult and young carers. Services include advice, information, support groups and help both practically and emotionally.

Both charities have grown and developed over the past few years and between them now employ thirty staff and have a turnover of 1.4 million pounds. Among the skills and experience we are looking for are fundraising, marketing, youth work and social care.

What are trustees?

Trustees are the people in charge of a charity. They help to make the UK the sixth most giving country in the world.

They play a vital role, volunteering their time and working together to make important decisions about the charity’s work.

Trustees’ Week is an annual event to showcase the great work that trustees do and highlight opportunities for people from all walks of life to get involved and make a difference.

How many trustees are there?

There are approximately 196,000 charities in the UK (167,000 charities in England and Wales, 24,000 in Scotland, 5,000 registered in Northern Ireland). And just over 1 million trustees (of which some 850,000 are in England and Wales, 180,000 in Scotland and 30,000 in Northern Ireland)

From NCVO and CCNI research, we know just under half the UK’s trustees are women.

The average trustee in England and Wales is 59 years old, and 55 in Northern Ireland.

There are many young trustees too with some 86,000 trustee positions held by 16-34 year olds (of which 2,611 in Northern Ireland).

The Young Trustees Movement – Will you pledge?

The Young Trustees Movement , aims to double the number of trustees aged 30 and under on charity boards by 2024 in England and Wales. While the spotlight is on the age factor, the movement is part of a wider call for diversity and best practice on charity boards. They aim to achieve this through three steps:

Mobilising charity leaders and young people to join & commit to the movement through a pledge

Supporting movement members to make their pledge a reality. We will do this by creating physical and digital hubs that provide:

  • Step by step practical and achievable guidance/resources e.g. a template meeting agenda, recruitment pack, etc.
  • Online learning, including a ‘Young Trustees in training’ programme
  • Best practice and shared learnings from failures and mess ups!
  • A space to connect and signposted to people and organisations within the Movement
  • Campaigning opportunities targeted at behaviour change in charity boards.

Creating a counter-narrative to challenge the current status quo of governance and perceptions of who a trustee should be.

Kira Lewis, 19, a Young Trustee of two boards said:

“With dire statistics such as one in twelve trustees being called either John or David, less than 3% of Charity Trustees being under 30 and less than 1% being under 25 – it’s no secret that board diversity is an issue.

People have been talking about board diversity for decades – what we need now is to combine this with meaningful action. There is already brilliant work being done in this space – but there is so much more to be done.

I’ve joined the movement to accelerate the pace of change, be part of a supportive network and to shine a light on best practice.

Let’s Talk Good Finance Milton Keynes: Key resources

Thank you to everyone who attended the Let’s Talk Good Finance event in Milton Keynes on 17 October, which was facilitated by Community Action: MK in partnership with NAVCA and Big Society Capital. We were really pleased to bring the session to Milton Keynes and  hope you found it useful!

If you are actively looking for finance, you may want to attend Good Finance Live in Birmingham on 29 October where there will be 17 social investors under one roof! It’s also a free event.

We also thought it would be useful to include links to the resources that were mentioned during the event.

We’ve learnt lots at these events and the most valuable lessons have been from those who’ve already taken on social investment. Read the 7 lessons of social investment.  

The Good Finance website has lots of useful information including a diagnostic tool and case studies of organisations who have already used social investment. It also has an investor directory and some great templates to help you with your business planning as well as resources to help you measure your impact. On legal structures, you can find links to info about what each structure means and what that means for raising investment in Things to consider (under point 5).

The Reach Fund is a grant programme to help charities and social enterprises raise investment.

If you feel that your board would benefit from some support to find out more about social investment GET INFORMED has free resources and mentors who can help – we didn’t mention this but you may have picked up a leaflet on it. There is a free webinar on 5 November about taking and managing risk.

Community Club – Unity Park Station

Community Action: MK went to visit the Community Club at Unity Park on Tuesday 22 October, it was great to feel welcomed and shown around the space that is a hub for multiple community organisations. The new community Club has been spreading the word about their new service – so we wanted to share with you how inviting it is and encourage you to pop in, meet the staff and volunteers. 

The Community Club has been open for 3 weeks, 10am-1pm. It is a warm and welcoming space that invites individuals to pop in, have a cup of tea, look around the charity shop, play games and meet new people. 

The volunteers working at Unity park are helpful and kind, offering you tea, biscuits and playing games with those who pop in. The space is there for anyone who wants to have a chat, ask for advice, play table tennis and other services. One of the aims of the community club is to reduce feelings of loneliness and support people. 

The team are keen to get in touch with agencies and organisations who might want to support guests. 

ALL are welcome, you can go along every Tuesday 10am-1pm.

All you ever wanted to know about social prescribing

The King’s Fund has produced a reading list on social prescribing for anybody who would like more information. It includes everything from introductory material (such as NHS England’s Social prescribing and community-based support: Summary guide) to qualitative studies (such as Delivering a primary care-based social prescribing initiative: a qualitative study of the benefits and challenges, so there is something for everybody.

Some of the reports have a specific focus such as exercise on referral or arts and health, whereas others are more general. This highlights the complexity of social prescribing, as well as the different rates of development. If you’re working on social prescribing – or thinking about it – this is a really useful resource.

Mental Health – Tips and Tools

Here at Community Action: MK we wore yellow as part of the #HelloYellow campaign supporting children and young people’s mental health. We had a range of yellows and various items, socks, jumpers, flowers – but we have to say the most creative was from one staff member who turned a yellow summer dress into a lovely scarf! 

We’ve been looking at the different mental health campaigns and came across loads of useful tips and supportive messages raising awareness for mental health and how important it is to talk and share.

This Quiz from Every MInd Matters – gets you to answer 5 questions and then gives you a Mind Plan. You are then given different tips and techniques that can support you and your mental health. It’s a great resource and one we have shared around the office. 

This ‘Reading well’ booklet – recommends reading to help you understand mental health and look after your mind.
