Sainsbury’s/Argos were busy at: Urb Farm

Ben Haines and Melissa Cadbury rallied 40 colleagues to take part in an activity at the Urb Farm Wolverton. They created a planting area which will enable the Farm’s disabled students and visitors to take part. The access for wheelchairs and walking aids which has been achieved is amazing!!

Join Community Action: MK to celebrate volunteers week and support charities and community groups to improve their environment to further support their clients, learners and staff. Over the last year we have introduced more than 500 corporate volunteers to 12 different charities to help make a difference.

Gardening on the grandest scale

  • The charity would like large boulders to be placed along the boundary of a lake bed to stop the pike from damaging the boundary and making the boundary unsafe. Date to be confirmed.

There are 20 places available for this opportunity.

Toys and play equipment in need of refurbishment!

Background:

The Play Services Team at this charity deliver a wide range of play related services which can be broadly broken down into three areas: Direct delivery of play, Support for deliverers of play and Partnership working – you name it, they do it! they support Breakfast Clubs, After School Clubs, Holiday Play Schemes and schools looking to improve their lunchtime provision with activities, resources or staff development.
  • Do you have the skills to be able to help revamping their hire equipment. The equipment is in desperate need of cleaning, repairing and painting. Children learn through play so it is important that the equipment looks attractive and inviting to them. The activity is not for the faint hearted as there is lots to be done! This activity can take place on Monday 5th, Tuesday 6th or Wednesday 7th June.

There are 15 places available for this opportunity.

Waterway Charity is in need of help

  • We need volunteers to support this charity with a variety of activities. From May onwards they will be working at 3 of their present sites. The activities will include clearing overgrown towpaths, building a dam to enable them to re-water the site later in the year, clearing reeds from an overgrown bed and in the summer painting lock gates. If you are interested and know the date that you are available we will then be able to work with the charity and let you know the exact project you would be working on. They need volunteers on the following date: Thursday 1st June.
There are 20 places available for each of the opportunities.

Creative Charity needs a spring clean

  • We need volunteers to support this charity with a big clear out. They are in breach of becoming hoarders since they were successful in securing a new storage unit which encouraged them to keep everything. Now the time has come for a declutter and tidy up.  They need volunteers on the following date: Thursday 1st June.
There are 20 places available for each of the opportunities.

Employee Volunteering really does make a difference…………

Mk Snap is celebrating 25 years of supporting adults with learning difficulties this year.

They were host to 70 + volunteers from Argos over a period of 6 days. The volunteers helped to improve the outside learning area for the learners and in preparation for the celebration.

We would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions to ensure we had the materials, tools and resources needed to make this a successful activity:

  • Network Rail
  • Ringway
  • National Trust Stowe

Day one: Saw some heavy work being carried out rehoming two large compost bunkers.

Day two: Muscles were the order of the day to create a base for an existing shed and then to pick the shed up and move it to it’s new home.

Day three: Clearing, tidying and mending was the order of the day when the polytunnel was tidied to accommodate disabled users. Planters were painted and mended, flower beds were cleared of weeds and some decorative stones placed.

Day four: Not for the faint hearted the team cracked on with the repositioning of large railway sleepers to make a raised bed and filled it with earth in preparation for planting.

Day five: Cutting back of branches and shrubs and generally tidying of a large planted area which included the use of strimmers, shears and hedge trimmers.

Day six: Alongside the normal tidying of beds, clearing planting areas the team were asked to move the ‘book of faces’ that is hoped to be used at the celebration.

Sue, head gardener said

“It’s the Argos effect – thank you – inspirational – transformed!”

Corporate Volunteers

Would your organisation benefit from having corporate volunteers to:

Kick start a project

Complete a project

Now that the New Year is upon us I would like to take this opportunity to ask if you have any projects that require corporate volunteers? As in previous years we are working with businesses to encourage their staff to come out and volunteer. In order to do this we need to identify more activities for them to get involved. Like most organisations they are able to commit if they are given dates in advance which enable them to plan staff capacity. We are looking for activities to take place in April and beyond, we are happy to meet to help identify and develop activities if this would be of use to you.

Follow the link to find out what we have so far. https://communityactionmk.org/business

We look forward to hearing from you. You can contact us at ev@communityactionmk.org.

Business Celebration Awards

unnamed (2)

Community Action: MK held their Business Celebration awards, hosted by Metro Bank, in November. This was to celebrate the volunteer contribution made by businesses through their Employee Volunteering Programme.

David Hopkins (Deputy Mayor) attended the celebration awards and had this to say in a letter to us:

Some inspiring stories and a real testament to the success of all our community building activities that we can acknowledge the role businesses play through encouraging employees to take part in voluntary work adding to the real sense of place that is our Milton Keynes.

A credit to Milton Keynes – well done to you all.
