Hope Is Louder than Hate
Today marks the start of A Million Acts of Hope, a national week celebrating the everyday acts of kindness, care and community happening across the UK.
At a time when division can often feel loud, this campaign is a chance to shine a light on the positive things happening in our communities every day and bringing people from all backgrounds and different walks of life together.
Where We See Hope…
Through our work with local voluntary, community, social enterprise, cultural and faith groups across Milton Keynes, we see acts of hope, kindness and solidarity every day.
We see communities creating welcoming spaces for refugees and newly arrived families, volunteers supporting people experiencing isolation, groups bringing neighbours together through shared meals, arts activities and community events, and organisations helping residents access support, friendship and a sense of belonging.
We’ve seen people come together to support mental health and wellbeing, tackle poverty, celebrate diversity and create stronger local connections. This happens in many different ways across the city, including through the networks and partnerships we support, such as the Mental Health Alliance, Refugee Support Network, Voluntary Sector Alliance, Cancer Forum, Volunteer Managers Network and area-based community networks in places like Whitehouse. These spaces help people, organisations and communities come together to share support, ideas, experiences and opportunities, helping strengthen connections and collaboration across Milton Keynes.
Communities Coming Together
Through events, drop-ins, community conversations, volunteering sessions and network meetings, our team has the opportunity to connect with local groups, organisations and residents in many different ways. In recent weeks, we’ve seen volunteers helping create welcoming wellbeing and community events, including sessions bringing people together to talk openly about cancer, health inequalities, mental health and support in a positive and compassionate way.
We’ve heard inspiring stories about groups using dance, creativity and community activities to support young people, tackle isolation and build confidence, including projects working with children and young people in disadvantaged areas. We’ve also seen communities coming together through public art, local markets, volunteering and community spaces such as libraries, helping people feel more connected and included.

Alongside this, it has been really encouraging to hear positive feedback from residents, volunteers, professionals and partner organisations about the impact of our work, from people sharing how volunteering has helped them move forward in their lives, to professionals recognising the value of local community support and partnerships. These conversations are an important reminder that even small acts of kindness, connection and encouragement can have a lasting impact on people and communities.
Recent events and initiatives have seen the voluntary sector come together with statutory organisations including MK City Council, NHS and other health colleagues, all with the aim of working together to create better services and a fairer City.
Looking Ahead to Volunteers’ Week
Many of these acts of hope are made possible by volunteers, community groups and local organisations quietly giving their time, energy and care to support others. As we look ahead to Volunteers’ Week next month, an annual campaign that sits at the heart of our work, this feels like an especially important moment to celebrate the people helping make hope visible across our city every day.
We’re looking forward to coming together at our Volunteers’ Week Celebration Event on Wednesday 3 June at MK Rose in Campbell Park – to recognise and thank the incredible volunteers and organisations making a difference across Milton Keynes! Community Action: MK are leading the event, but it has very much been a collective effort, with local organisations coming together to help us shape, plan and deliver it for the city.
