Our first thank you and volunteer story to kick of Volunteers’ Week 2026 comes a volunteer from Men in Sheds!
Men in Sheds
I moved to Milton Keynes after COVID and, at the time, I didn’t really know anyone locally. Joining Men in Sheds Milton Keynes has made a huge difference to my life. Through the Shed, I’ve made some unexpected friends — both people my own age and people around the age of my parents. I’ve met so many kind and generous people who are willing to share their vast knowledge, skills and experience. I’ve learnt how to use machines, tools and devices that I would never otherwise have had the chance to try, and that I wouldn’t be able to afford to buy or store myself. The Shed has been incredibly welcoming to me. One thing I think people may not realise is how diverse it is. It’s not just one type of person or one type of craft. People come together to work on all sorts of things, from sewing and knitting to woodworking, metalworking and electronics. There is always something new to learn, and always someone happy to help. For me, volunteering and being part of the Shed has been about much more than making things. It has helped me feel connected to my local community, build friendships, learn practical skills, and feel at home in Milton Keynes.
All members of Men in Sheds Milton Keynes are volunteers, and the organisation does not have any paid employees. It is amazing that such a large, active and welcoming organisation runs entirely through the time, effort and goodwill of volunteers. I would like to say thank you to everyone who gives their time, shares their skills, helps keep the Shed running, supports other members, and makes it such a friendly place to be. The Shed simply would not exist without its volunteers, and their contribution makes a real difference to people’s lives.
I’m very grateful to everyone at Men in Sheds Milton Keynes for creating such a friendly, welcoming and supportive space.
